The mechanical inspection isn't optional
No serious seller refuses to let a third party inspect the car before purchase. Take the unit to a shop or dealer of your choice — never one the seller suggests — and ask for at minimum: a computer scan (fault codes), drivetrain, suspension, brakes, and evidence of collision or flood damage.
A computer scan can reveal recently cleared codes, a sign a fault was hidden right before the sale. A lift lets you see welding, irregular rust, or chassis repairs invisible from the ground.
This inspection costs a fraction of the car's price. Skipping it to avoid 'inconveniencing' the seller is the most common way a good purchase turns into a costly problem.
