How to act at a checkpoint

As you approach a checkpoint, slow down early, turn on the interior light at night, and keep your hands visible on the wheel while you're signaled to stop.

Lower the window enough to speak clearly, and have your license and registration ready without needing to dig through the glove box in front of the officer — keep them somewhere accessible before you leave home.

Answer calmly and directly. If the stop feels irregular or the officer isn't visibly identified, you have the right to ask for their name and assignment; you can note it down and report it afterward to the appropriate authority if you think it's warranted.
