Three habits of defensive driving

Keep at least a three-second gap from the car ahead — more in rain or low visibility. That margin gives you real reaction time for a sudden stop or unexpected obstacle.

Check your mirrors every 8 to 10 seconds, not just before changing lanes. Constantly knowing what's around the car — not only ahead — is what lets you anticipate another driver's risky move before it happens.

Avoid getting boxed in with no way out when traffic is completely stopped: always leave enough space with the car in front so you can maneuver to the side if needed.
